While this film is only getting a rating of 4.6/10 on IMDB and 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, I found it to be quite entertaining. I have loved Melissa McCarthy ever since her role in Gilmore Girls. She has also been in the news lately for the difficulty she had finding a designer to make her dress for the Oscars due to her weight. The whole thing is absolutely ridiculous because I think she is gorgeous and while being healthy is important, judging people on their weight should be something of the past and everyone should have access to clothing that makes them feel good and comfortable… but I am now getting off topic.
Tammy was written by Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone who also stars in the film and directed it. He won the award for “Directors to Watch” at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It is an all star cast and I am so thrilled that Susan Sarandon did a film with McCarthy. They are a wonderful duo. I enjoy almost every film Sarandon has done and to see her letting loose again reminds me of Thelma and Louise… less dramatic of course but cars, drinking and “guns” are still involved. Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh and the rest of the cast all have their moments of hilarity and I am very glad that the clips shown in the preview did not give away all of the funny scenes in the film. There was a lot more to the story line than I thought.
I can see why some viewers may have been disappointed but I definitely think it is worth watching at least once if you want to have a good laugh and if you are a fan of McCarthy’s but you may want to wait for it to be out of the theater or go on a cheap night. (I love McCarthy, so I’m really trying to avoid offering solely a biased opinion).
